“You bitch! You whore!” Thanh was screaming almost hysterically, her hands balled into fists, as she stood over Nhu, who was struggling to rise up from her bed. Thanh had never cursed at anyone before, and wasn’t even sure how to do it. “You killed Robert!”
“What?” Nhu had been asleep when Thanh burst into the house, and she was blinking her eyes and trying to sit up.
“You shot Robert! Why did you do that?”
Nhu winced with pain as she swung her feet off the bed and raised her face toward Thanh. “Calm down, girl,” she commanded. “I did not shoot Robert. I have been here all day.”
“Not today,” Thanh barked at her impatiently. She could feel the hot tears running down her cheeks. “Three days ago.”
Nhu narrowed her eyes. “The man in the jeep? That was a colonel.”
“No, it was Robert. And you killed him!” Thanh’s legs gave out from under her and she collapsed on the dirt floor, crying uncontrollably.
“Are you sure?” Nhu asked, not entirely unsympathetic.
Thanh nodded and choked back her sobs enough to say, “His sergeant told me.”
Nhu reluctantly reached out a hand to comfort Thanh, but Thanh brushed it away. She pulled herself up to sit cross-legged. She continued to whimper and sniff, wiping her eyes on her sleeve.
“I am sorry,” Nhu said in a matter-of-fact tone.
“Are you sorry because you killed my friend,” Thanh challenged her, “or because he was not a colonel?”
“Both,” Nhu admitted with a nod.
“You are a terrible person! I hate you! I am leaving.”
“No, you are not.” Nhu looked at her sternly. “We have a mission. Uncle Ho sent you here to me, and I will make sure we complete our task. After we are done, then you may leave, but only then.”
Thanh glared back at Nhu, but recognized that Nhu was right. She could not let Uncle Ho down. But after they fired those missiles, she was done. She would go back home to her mother and become a farmer. She would no longer fight the Americans. Let others do that. People like Nhu.
Nhu gently probed her swollen breast and grimaced. “I must change my bandage. When you have come to your senses, you have a letter over on the table. A comrade delivered it this morning after you left.”
Biting her lower lip, Thanh forced herself to stopping sobbing and breathe more normally. Finally she was able to stand up and go over to the table, where a simple white envelope lay. She picked it up and stared at it. The outside had only her name, and no return address. For a split second she hoped that it was from Robert, but immediately realized that was impossible, and her name had clearly been written by a Vietnamese, not an American. Nhu had gathered up the medical supplies and dumped them on the table in preparation, and was now taking off her shirt. Nhu took the envelope over to her bed and sat down. For a minute she just looked at the envelope and wondered who had sent it.
